Making sense of message mapping.
A clearer approach to moving between data models, one field and one assumption at a time.
Map meaning before fields
Begin with a source and target example. Document what each field means, whether it is required, and who owns its value. Matching names alone is not enough when systems use different conventions.
Be explicit about empty values
Distinguish an absent field from an empty string and a deliberate null. Agree whether each should preserve, clear or reject a target value. Test repeating elements, date formats and time zones using representative payloads.
Keep the integration flow readable
Use descriptive step names and isolate transformations from routing. Keep external endpoints and environment-specific values in supported configuration rather than hardcoding them into a mapping.
Verify the target contract
Validate the transformed message against the target schema where available. Exercise both expected and invalid inputs in a development tenant, and avoid placing personal data into message trace logs.
